The War Against Mrs Hadley [1942] [DVD]Fay Bainter (actor) Edward Arnold (actor) Format: all-region dvd (worldwide) Runtime: 85 min Quality: Excellent
When the Second World War comes to America with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the spoiled, wealthy, snobbish and stubborn Mrs Hadley, widow of a Washington newspaper magnate, regards it as a personal affront that her needs are ignored, and learns a lot of hard lessons about life and herself.
Directed by Harold S Bucquet and starring the splendid middle-aged character actress Fay Bainter, this is a cunning mix of family drama, psychological study, moral fable and patriotic wartime propaganda.
The excellent cast includes Edward Arnold as a War Department bigwig in love with Mrs Hadley and Richard Ney as the son she practically ruins with her indulgence and possessiveness, as well as Van Johnson, Jean Rogers and, best of all, Sara Allgood. |
