British director Lance Comfort had a successful early career with films like Hotel Reserve and Hatter's Castle. Yet, by the time he came to make this flashback frippery, adapted from a penny-dreadful by Francis Brett Young, he was one of the country's most accomplished makers of low budget thrillers.
Consequently, he had rather lost the knack for this kind of "woman's picture", with its all-too-familiar blend of reminiscence, romance and regret. Australian actress Margaret Johnston fails to make much impact as she recounts details of her three marriages to her curious granddaughter. |
