Female [1933] [DVD]Ruth Chatterton (actor) George Brent (actor) Format: all-region dvd (worldwide) Runtime: 65 min Quality: Digital
A splendid starring vehicle for the largely forgotten Ruth Chatterton, this comedy/drama presents her as an intelligent and liberated female who runs a car manufacturing company and seduces the better-looking male employees for amorous relief. Her astonishing mansion marks an early screen appearance for Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House in the Hollywood Hills.
Skilfully directed by Michael Curtiz (with uncredited assistance from William A Wellman), the film rapidly loses conviction when dreary George Brent (Chatterton's real-life husband at the time) comes along and is supposed to bowl her over. |
