Bhowani Junction (1956)
Synopsis: Director George
Cukor's record with action was far from enviable when he set off for Pakistan
to shoot this adaptation of John Masters's novel about inflamed political and
romantic passions in the last days of the Raj. Yet, surprisingly, the crowd
scenes and the acts of Communist terror are the best parts of this rather
turgid melodrama.
Cukor was known as a woman's director,
but he fails to coax any kind of performance out of Ava Gardner, who was about
to divorce then-husband Frank Sinatra and leave Hollywood for the high life in
Europe.
Cast: Richard Egan, Dorothy McGuire, Sandra Dee, Arthur
Kennedy, Troy Donahue. Runtime: 130 min
