The Farmer's Daughter (1947)(DVD)

Synopsis: Loretta Young picked up her best actress Oscar for this strangely accented, but utterly charming, performance as Katrin Holstrom, a fictionalised Swede who comes to Washington as a lady's maid and ends up running for Congress opposing the man she loves.

Holstrom's really an RKO mouthpiece for producer Dore Schary's Hollywood-liberal political views, but the original play Hulda, Daughter of Parliament was, amazingly, a hit in Finland. Eventually Schary took over MGM from the ousted reactionary Louis B Mayer, and Young became one of the brightest names in the early days of television.
