Ride Vaquero! (1953)(dvd)

Synopsis: This poorly written western arouses some interest from MGM's offbeat casting of the three stars: Robert Taylor, as the quiet but deadly right-hand man of a Mexican bandit; Howard Keel, in a non-singing role as a foolhardy rancher; and Ava Gardner, as the rancher's virtuous wife.

Only Anthony Quinn, playing the flamboyant, egotistical Mexican bandit chief who attacks the American ranchers invading his domain, seems cast to type — and he walks away with the picture. John Farrow's direction, Robert Surtees's photography and Bronislau Kaper's music are far superior to the script, with its feeble echoes of better westerns.
