Rio Conchos [1964] [DVD]Richard Boone (actor) Stuart Whitman (actor)
Format: all-region dvd (worldwide) Runtime: 107 min Quality: Digital (2.35:1)
This is a violent near remake (uncredited) of The Comancheros, a reasonable hit for 20th Century Fox in 1961. Sadly, John Wayne is missing here, though Richard Boone is a sturdy, if stolid, substitute. Stuart Whitman makes a return from the earlier movie and Edmond O'Brien puts in a reliable performance.
It is competently handled by veteran director Gordon Douglas, who evokes The Charge at Feather River in the climactic attack, but the whole just isn't involving enough. Still, any such gritty western in CinemaScope is welcome, and this is interesting for the feature film debut of American football star Jim Brown, who would later walk away with 100 Rifles, a film with a very similar story. |
