Angels One Five (1953)

Runtime: 98 min

Synopsis: Jack Hawkins, John Gregson and Michael Denison do well in this low-key, intelligent Second World War drama that attempts to show the reality of service life during the Battle of Britain. Director George More O'Ferrall draws on his first-hand knowledge of the subject, gained during wartime RAF service, to probe the emotions behind the British stiff upper lip. It was a big hit in its day, and is still worth the time now.

Jack Hawkins
Born: 14 September 1910, Wood Green, London, England, UK
Died: 18 July 1973, London, England, UK.

Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia: Rugged, square-jawed British actor whose innate strength and rich voice ideally suited him to play authoritarians. In films from the early 1930s, Hawkins essayed juveniles and character parts for many years, then came into his own in the 1950s. Best remembered as the Egyptian ruler in Land of the Pharaohs (1955), the stiff-upper-lipped Major Warden in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), an intrepid C.I.D. inspector in Gideon of Scotland Yard (1958), Quintus Arrius in BenHur (1959), the former military officer turned criminal in The League of Gentlemen (1960), and General Allenby in Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Stricken with throat cancer in 1966, Hawkins had an operation that forced the removal of his larynx; gamely, he continued acting in pictures, for which his voice was dubbed by others. He was once married to actress Jessica Tandy (1932-42).
