You'll Like My Mother (1972) (dvd)

Synopsis: A refreshingly low-key psycho thriller eschewing all the obvious horror trappings to deliver a nail-biting climax. Pregnant widow Patty Duke stumbles on some dark family secrets when she arrives at mother-in-law Rosemary Murphy's house for the first time to grieve over her husband's death in Vietnam. For the unwelcoming Murphy is not only keeping a mentally disabled girl locked in the attic, she's also hiding her rapist son in the cellar!

Trapped in the house by a snowstorm, Duke gives birth and Murphy tells her the baby has died, which sets the tense scene for unnerving suspense. Despite a few lapses in logic, a certain sloppiness on director Lamont Johnson's part as the finale approaches and the miscasting of Richard Thomas (John Boy in TV's The Waltons) as a sadistic rapist, this scare show has the finesse of a near-classic Hitchcock.
