Westbound (1959)
Synopsis: A decent Civil War
western with genre stalwart Randolph Scott tearing his hair out as a Union
officer transporting gold from California to finance the war effort and running
into Confederate sympathisers and old flame Virginia Mayo along the way. This
does not break any new ground but rather re-ploughs the old furrows with
consummate professionalism, pacing and style.
These westerns were a
dime a dozen in the early 1950s, but gradually slipped out of favour, and this
is one of the last highly conventional examples to be made. Totally politically
incorrect, but easy enough on the eye.
Cast: Randolph Scott,
Virginia Mayo Runtime: 68 min
