Two-Faced Woman (1941)(DVD)
Synopsis: Greta Garbo's last
movie is nowhere near as bad as contemporary reviews would have you believe,
and certainly didn't warrant the most fabulous female screen face of all opting
for a retirement that would last until her death almost 50 years later. There's
much to enjoy in this sophisticated comedy, especially Garbo dancing the
Chica-Chocka.
The risqué material led to the
Catholic League of Decency condemning the movie, and it was actually banned in
Australia, factors that didn't help Garbo's image. Today we can appreciate it
for what it is: a well-performed (especially by Constance Bennett and Melvyn
Douglas) piece of froth. Trouble was, Garbo's fans thought it unworthy of her,
and perhaps so did she.
Cast: Greta Garbo, Melvyn
Douglas Runtime: 93 min
