There Was a Crooked Man
(1970)
Synopsis: Kirk Douglas and
Henry Fonda actors as different in style and persona as could be
are pitted against each other in this period crime movie with a western
flavour. Douglas is a tough uncompromising outlaw who escapes from jail and
goes in search of his hidden booty; Fonda is the gentle sheriff-turned-prison
warden who patiently pursues Douglas in the hope of rehabilitating him.
With a screenplay by Robert Benton and David Newman (Bonnie and Clyde),
direction by the veteran Joseph L Mankiewicz and two major stars, the movie
promises much, but delivers no more than a professionally assembled, rather odd
comedy drama.
