The
Strawberry Blonde (1941)
Synopsis: Dentists don't
often get to play romantic leads in the movies, but James Cagney does his bit
to make up for this neglect by playing a struggling tooth-doctor in this remake
of the 1933 Gary Cooper movie One Sunday Afternoon. Scripted by Julius and
Philip Epstein, who helped write Casablanca the following year, this is an
agreeable comedy, set in turn-of-the-century New York.
The action
flashes back to tell of Cagney's enduring passion for Rita Hayworth in the
title role, but his ultimate discovery is that, in nice, sweet Olivia de
Havilland, he has married the right woman all along. Ahhhh.
