The
Power of One (1991)
Synopsis: A solid and gritty
adaptation of Bryce Courtenay's rite-of-passage novel set in South Africa in
the 1930s and 1940s. Stephen Dorff stars as an outsider whose friendship, as a
young boy, with tutor Armin Mueller-Stahl and prisoner Morgan Freeman inspires
him to fight against racial injustice.
Dorff gives a mature
performance, but he struggles to carry the action, while his experienced
co-stars never put a foot wrong. As you would expect from the director of
Rocky, John G Avildsen handles the boxing scenes with some skill, but his grasp
of political discourse and teenage romance is less assured.
