Synopsis:
A wonderful slice of melodramatic soap opera that froths and crackles with
gloriously histrionic performances. This is Bette Davis at her best, as an
unmarried mother whose unsuspecting daughter prefers the company of Davis's
deeply Machiavellian sister Miriam Hopkins. Davis and Hopkins spar like a pair
of theatrical prizefighters rising from each knock-out punch to reel around the
set, shake the sweat from their brows and come back for more. The period
setting provides the perfect costumes to accompany all the trouncing and
flouncing. Never a dull moment.
