The Notorious Landlady
(1962)
Runtime: 126 min Country:
USA Language: English
Synopsis: This eccentric comedy
mystery set principally in London features a sparkling cast led by Jack Lemmon,
Kim Novak and, briefly, Fred Astaire as the American ambassador. Lemmon plays a
newly arrived diplomat whose landlady (Novak), is suspected of murdering her
husband who has vanished. When the husband does appear, Novak promptly shoots
him. After that twist the plot thickens so much, in fact, that Lemmon
admitted that he didn't have a clue what was going on in Blake Edwards and
Larry Gelbart's screenplay. I delivered lines with absolute
conviction, he said, and I haven't the faintest idea what they
meant. London is created entirely on studio sets, giving the film an arch
theatricality, like a blend of Arsenic and Old Lace, a Gilbert and Sullivan
operetta and Agatha Christie.
