The Notorious Landlady (1962)

Runtime: 126 min
Country: USA
Language: English

Synopsis: This eccentric comedy mystery set principally in London features a sparkling cast led by Jack Lemmon, Kim Novak and, briefly, Fred Astaire as the American ambassador. Lemmon plays a newly arrived diplomat whose landlady (Novak), is suspected of murdering her husband who has vanished. When the husband does appear, Novak promptly shoots him. After that twist the plot thickens — so much, in fact, that Lemmon admitted that he didn't have a clue what was going on in Blake Edwards and Larry Gelbart's screenplay. “I delivered lines with absolute conviction,” he said, “and I haven't the faintest idea what they meant.” London is created entirely on studio sets, giving the film an arch theatricality, like a blend of Arsenic and Old Lace, a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta and Agatha Christie.
