The Night Has Eyes (1942)(dvd)

Synopsis: The saturnine side of James Mason's screen persona was exploited to the full in this studio-bound melodrama, set on the Yorkshire moors. Two schoolteachers, Joyce and Doris (Joyce Howard and Tucker McGuire), are hiking across the same moors where exactly a year previously their colleague disappeared.

When a storm breaks they take shelter in a spooky house, the home of the tormented Stephen Deremid (Mason), a reclusive composer and wounded veteran of the Spanish Civil War who is subject to fits. Director Leslie Arliss develops the sinister atmosphere with some skill, making this modest but absorbing entertainment.
