The
National Health (1973)(DVD)
Synopsis: This adaptation of
Peter Nichols's play shows the United Kingdom in intensive care. The setting is
a rundown, ramshackle hospital, where the grisly reality of life on a men's
ward contrasts with the slippery fiction of a TV soap opera entitled Nurse
Norton's Affair.
Director Jack Gold assembles some sprightly set pieces
and fine actors (Donald Sinden, Lynn Redgave, Jim Dale) who give real clout to
Nichols's sometimes contrived satire.
