Merry Widow (1952)
Synopsis: Oodles of MGM money
and all-stops-out Technicolor were lavished on this version of Franz Lehar's
much-loved operetta, set in the fantasy principality of Marshovia, but to
little avail. A new and pedestrian screenplay, heavy-handed direction and the
casting of an unsubtle Lana Turner (dubbed by Trudy Erwin) and a stereotypical
Fernando Lamas as Count Danilo drains the material of its romantic charm. For
style, elegance, wit, sophistication, subtle eroticism, and sparkling
performances, Lubitsch's 1934 version with Jeanette MacDonald and Maurice
Chevalier remains incomparable.
