The McConnell Story (1955)

Synopsis: Alan Ladd was terrified of flying, but he had no qualms about playing Captain Joseph C McConnell Jr, a real-life pilot ace of the Korean War. It's standard stuff, with Ladd putting duty first and his patient wife (June Allyson) second, though the script had to be revised when McConnell was killed testing a new type of plane shortly before production started.

Allyson had scored as a grieving widow in The Glenn Miller Story, and she rises to the occasion here. The jingoistic embellishments are somewhat sickening, however. The film was released in the UK as Tiger in the Sky.
