Mating Game (1959)
Synopsis: The Darling Buds of
May is better known here as the popular TV series which starred the ubiquitous
David Jason and introduced us to Catherine Zeta-Jones, so it may seem
sacrilegious to point out that this MGM version of HE Bates's novel is much
funnier and more faithful to the spirit of the original.
The cast is
also much classier: Paul Douglas is a truly estimable father to Debbie
Reynolds, the farm girl who falls for taxman Tony Randall, and director George
Marshall, a dab hand at this kind of farce, keeps it all zipping along. Nice
use of CinemaScope framing, too.
