The Lone Hand [1953] [DVD]

A routine western from Universal, with Joel McCrea posing as an outlaw to bring a criminal gang to justice. McCrea's stolid sturdiness nearly sinks the film; you keep wanting him to show more emotion, but, after all, he is in disguise, even from his own son. George Sherman's direction is undistinguished, but two subsequent TV stars make a creditable showing - Barbara Hale from Perry Mason and Gunsmoke's James Arness. McCrea and Hale would team up again four years later for the equally uninvolving The Oklahoman.

Western starring Joel McCrea and Barbara Hale. Zachary Hallock and his young son move west to farm but, when a Pinkerton detective is killed, local vigilantes name him as a suspect.
