The
Great Lie (1941)(Region 2 DVD)
Synopsis: This is one of the
greatest films Bette Davis made at Warner Bros. Once termed women's
pictures, they are now recognised as being among the finest products of
the studio system. Here, Davis is given more than a run for her money by
co-star Mary Astor, who collected the best supporting actress Oscar as Davis's
rival in love for handsome George Brent, allegedly Davis's lover in real life.
Both female stars pull out all the stops in a tale about the
ownership of Brent's child; director Edmund Goulding knows better
than to hold them back, and, since Astor's character is a concert pianist,
ladles on the Tchaikovsky.
Cast: Bette Davis, George
Brent Runtime: 108 min
