The
Gazebo (1959)(dvd)
Synopsis: It's a small
summerhouse in the grounds of a country estate, for those who don't know, only
under this particular gazebo there may, or may not, be a dead body. Likeable
stars Glenn Ford and Debbie Reynolds are super together, and were to pair up
again soon after for the same director George Marshall in the limp It Started
with a Kiss, but here they're close to their box-office prime, and both are
enchanting.
They're nearly acted off the screen, though, by character
stars John McGiver and Doro Merande. Despite being attractively photographed in
CinemaScope, the movie's theatrical source shows through all too clearly, and
MGM was ill-advised to go with black and white, although the film was
Oscar-nominated for costume design. Oh, and there's a great performance from a
pigeon called Herman.
Cast: Glenn Ford Runtime: 101
mins Quality: 4:3, ntsc transfer, good for it's
age.
