The Chiltern Hundreds (1949)(dvd)

Synopsis: Although John Paddy Carstairs directed several Norman Wisdom vehicles, this wry political satire is his most accomplished picture. Adapted by William Douglas Home from his own play, the film takes its title from the nominal office MPs take when they wish to resign.

Recalling the gentle class comedies produced by Ealing in this period, the election battle between an earl's socialist son (David Tomlinson) and his true blue butler (Cecil Parker) is full of sly observations. Alas, we see too little of AE Matthews, who also starred in Home's stage sequel to this piece, The Manor of Northshead. That play, however, was never filmed.

Cast: Cecil Parker, A E Matthews
Runtime: 84 min
