Smilin' Through (1941)(dvd)

Synopsis: The second sound version of this romantic drama stars Jeanette MacDonald in the dual role of the dead wife and niece of bereaved husband Brian Aherne, and accordingly works in several songs (of the Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes and Land of Hope and Glory variety).

It also acquires blazing Technicolor and the direction of Frank Borzage who hits new heights — or depths! — in treacly and melodramatic sentimentality.

MacDonald acts well, as does Aherne, but Gene Raymond (the star's real-life husband) is an unattractive disaster as a drunken jealous suitor and his son.

Cast: Jeanette MacDonald and Brian Aherne
Runtime: 100 min
