Scaramouche (1952) Available on all-region DVD from Warner
Brothers
Synopsis: Rafael Sabatini's
rousing adventure was first filmed in 1923 by the master of the silent
swashbuckler, Rex Ingram. This colourful version has been pared down to the
bone by its writers, so that only the feuding, flirting and fencing remain of
the classic novel's vivacious and complex portrait of Revolutionary France.
Stewart Granger was at his best in period dress and here he cuts a dash
as the mysterious swordsman on the trail of arrogant aristocrat Mel Ferrer and
exudes charm in his scenes with the two women in his life, Janet Leigh and
Eleanor Parker. The final duel has the distinction of being the longest in
movie history.
