Synopsis: Audiences wanted
colour, upholstery and royalty in the postwar era, and this sumptuous British
movie about a claim to the Hanoverian throne of England has all the
ingredients. Joan Greenwood (a husky seductress of so many British actors) plays the king's wife, but she fancies Stewart Granger, a Swedish count of indifferent pedigree and accent, who was previously involved with Flora Robson, who goes into a fit of jealous rage. It's a shame that Basil Dearden and Michael Relph directed it with straight faces, but no one, thankfully, could suppress Greenwood in full flounce and, later on, mourning glory.
