Synopsis: Thanks to a fine
ensemble cast and the authenticity of the action, this Second World War drama
about an oil tanker struggling to cross the Atlantic after being attacked by a
German battleship not only did its bit in boosting Britain's morale, but also
played a key role in the evolution of Ealing Studios. Based on a true story, it served as an allegory for the nation's fortunes since 1939 — the ship may have been damaged, but its gallant crew successfully salvaged it and brought it into port ready to fight another day. Although Charles Frend is credited as sole director, he was indisposed for much of the production and co-writer/producer Robert Hamer actually called the shots.
