Portnoy's Complaint (1972)(dvd)
Synopsis: For his directing
debut, screenwriter Ernest Lehman Sabrina Fair, Sweet Smell of Success,
North by Northwest and many blockbusting musicals, including The Sound of
Music, bear his imprimatur chose Philip Roth's scandalous novel about
the difficulties of being Jewish and the joys of masturbation. Portnoy (a
smirking Richard Benjamin) has been a lonely, repressed child who has grown up
playing obsessively with himself as Woody Allen called it, It's
sex with someone you love.
Various prostitutes and fashion models
try and help Portnoy in this satire that should really have been a hardcore
porn movie but emerges as a limp, unfunny imitation of The Graduate.
