Penelope [1966] [DVD]

A glossy comedy with Natalie Wood as the compulsive thief who robs a bank and is then persuaded by her shrink to break into the bank again and put the money back. Then the plot obliges her to break into the bank yet again. Heist movies were very big in the mid-1960s and this one certainly has the most gorgeous-looking thief. If only it also had a wittier script, pacier direction and a real leading man - George Segal, say - to play opposite the vivacious Natalie Wood. All too often Penelope shows how the big studios - in this case MGM - were losing contact with their audience by making films that were already dated on release.

Comedy, starring Natalie Wood as a neglected wife with larcenous tendencies who plans to rob her husband's bank. Peter Falk, Ian Bannen and Dick Shawn also star.
