Oklahoma Crude (1973)(dvd)

Synopsis: Sumptuously produced and directed by Stanley Kramer on a high budget, it boasts terrific production values (though weak special effects work) and a fine cast led by Faye Dunaway and George C Scott at their respective ripsnorting bests. But once the oil gushers have gushed there's precious little plot or characterisation left, only the vicious Jack Palance, determined to wrest Faye's lone oil well from her.

What on earth is Britain's pride John Mills doing in all this, you may well ask. However, the Panavision photography is stunning, thanks to Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Surtees, the Henry Mancini music score is fabulous, the editing by all-time great Folmar Blangsted is impeccable, but they don't make up for that interminable, plotless script.
