New Moon (1940)

Synopsis: A splendid and popular Jeanette MacDonald/Nelson Eddy version of Sigmund Romberg's operetta, which was filmed a decade earlier with Metropolitan Opera stars Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett. MGM changed the setting from pre-revolutionary Russia to a very anti-British New Orleans, but it makes no difference.

If you know MGM, the tracking shot of Eddy performing Stout Hearted Men is, funnily enough, suspiciously similar in setting and style to Douglas McPhail's title number in the previous year's Babes in Arms. It's all the same to Metro!

The terrific score includes Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, Lover Come Back and One Kiss, all with marvellous Oscar Hammerstein lyrics.

Cast: Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy
Runtime: 105 min
