My Cousin Rachel (1952)(dvd)

Synopsis: Based on Daphne du Maurier's novel, this overwrought melodrama has Richard Burton first detesting, then obsessively loving Olivia de Havilland, who married and may have murdered his beloved cousin.

Set on the clifftops of 19th-century Cornwall, it puts the story of Rebecca into reverse gear and delivers great dollops of emotion. (A shame it's not in colour, though.) The dashingly handsome, brooding Burton picked up the first of his seven unsuccessful Oscar nominations for his first Hollywood role.
