Joey Boy (1965)
Synopsis: With longtime
collaborator Sidney Gilliat, Frank Launder was one of the bastions of British
cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. But his brand of comedy had passed its sell-by
date by the Swinging Sixties, as this unpardonably awful film (written and
directed by Launder) demonstrates only too well.
Some of the period's
top TV sitcom stars are left with egg on their faces, none more so than Harry H
Corbett as the brains behind a gang of petty crooks who join the army to avoid
prison. Never has Corbett's hangdog expression been worn with such
justification as it is here.
