I Wanted Wings [1941] [DVD]

Ray Milland, William Holden and Wayne Morris join the Army Air Corps and head for Texas for their training as fighter pilots in director Mitchell Leisen's action drama. The script - co-written by future Bond writer Richard Maibaum - is top-heavy with plot as the three guys work out their romantic entanglements, learn to fly, bond in buddy fashion and still keep us guessing as to who survives.

Veronica Lake (billing herself as that for the first time) is the love interest, though Leisen apparently thought she had no talent and bullied her, so that the scene when she becomes hysterical in a plane was hardly acting at all.
