Everybody Does It (1949)(dvd)

Synopsis: This very funny remake of Wife, Husband and Friend sensibly retains Nunnally Johnson's clever script almost word for word, but is far better cast than that 1939 Loretta Young vehicle. Celeste Holm is simply terrific as a woman who wants to sing opera but can't, while Paul Douglas is no less fine as her husband, who can sing opera but doesn't!

Elsewhere Linda Darnell is lovely as the local neighbourhood diva. Amazingly based on a James M Cain original - after all, he was the creator of Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice - this trifle is lightly directed by Grand Hotel veteran Edmund Goulding, and is consistantly amusing throughout.
