Blonde Bombshell (1933, dvd)

Synopsis: Here's a chance to see Jean Harlow in the movie that originally opened as merely Bombshell. It's a perceptive yet affectionate satire on Hollywood itself, with the peroxide sex symbol playing movie sexpot Lola Burns, desperate for a life away from the cameras.

It's quite a wacky farce with some biting observations, and Harlow really proves her worth, keeping sentimentality at bay while revealing a warm yet snappy comedic style that would serve her well in her next film, the all-star classic Dinner at Eight.

This movie is directed by one of Hollywood's most underrated craftsmen, Victor Fleming of Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz fame, who squeezes every inch of mileage out of a plot one suspects he understood very well.
