Yank At Eton (1942)
Synopsis: Adhering to the
formula ensconced during Robert Taylor's sojourn in Oxford, this is as much a
wartime treatise on Anglo-American relations as an adolescent entertainment.
Yet it continues to amuse thanks to Mickey Rooney's well-honed blend of bluster
and sentiment.
Arriving in Blighty with a sizeable chip on his
shoulder, following his mother's remarriage to horse-breeding landowner Ian
Hunter, Rooney embarks on bucking the system, until he comes to appreciate its
values and traditions. His confrontations with school bully Peter Lawford and
step-brother Freddie Bartholomew are pure corn, but his meetings with wily
headmaster Edmund Gwenn are even purer MGM.
