A Guy Named Joe (1943)

Synopsis: A supernatural morale-booster for wartime, this is an MGM glossy with all that great studio's polish. Spencer Tracy stars as an air force pilot who is killed on a mission.

He returns in spirit to help the living — in particular his former girlfriend Irene Dunne and her admirer, new pilot Van Johnson.

Victor Fleming directed the unification of the two with splendid aplomb, and fans of the film included Steven Spielberg, who re-made it as Always (1989). It didn't work: he didn't have these stars.

Cast:Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne
Runtime: 108 min
