Synopsis: The last movie from great American director John Ford is, as one might expect, a transplanted western. It's set in Manchuria in 1935, where a group of remarkably resolute women missionaries are threatened by the local Mongolian warlord (a cleverly cast Mike Mazurki). Ford has the benefit of a superb cast, headed by Anne Bancroft as a cynical physician who ends up risking everything to protect the mission.

Originally a Norah Lofts novel called Chinese Finale, this may seem unlikely Ford material on the surface, but the old maestro certainly makes it his own, treating such skilled performers as Flora Robson, Margaret Leighton and Sue Lyon as though they were members of the US cavalry.
